Places of Interest in Sonamarg:

 Thajwas Glacier, Zojilla pass, Baltal. Krishnasar lake


Sonamarg  is a beautiful place full of natural grace and gifts. This charming little town lies on national highway between Srinagar and leh Ladakh. It is located at a distance of 80 Kms from Srinagar and a height of  2740m. Sonmarg has some stunning blue water lakes and rich in color grasslands. From Sonmarg, you can also look at the towering snow clad mountains of the Ladakh region that are a real treat to eyes.

Sonmarg is synonymous with quiet meadows and flower-carpeted fields surrounded by amazing glaciers, miniature plateaus, snowfields, pines and islets. The entire region, 80 km from Srinagar, has some of the highest mountain ranges of the world. These snow clad peaks when reflect the golden rays of the sun, give a sparkling effect to the entire valley. This is the reason why the hill station is named Sonmarg or Sonamarg. The word Sonamarg literally means 'the Meadow of Gold'.

The glaciers, waterfalls and placid lakes add some more beauty to this tranquil valley. Situated at an altitude of 2740 m above sea level, at the foot of the Zojila pass, Sonmarg is the gateway to Ladakh. It is a perfect place for the excursionists.

 Thajwas Glacier:

  Sonamarg offer many adventurous routes with amazing green water & frozen lakes around and Thajiwas glacier is a one such major tourist attraction in the region.Thajwas glacier is located at a distance of 7 Km from Sonamrg. It is an ideal spot for enjoying a sledge ride on the snow even in mid-summer. The nearby area is perfect camping site too.


Baltal is located on the shores of the Sindh River It  is located around 15 km away from the north of Sonamarg. This small valley is a famous camping ground.  It is base camp for Annual Amarnath Yatra. Baltal is  only a day's journey away from the sacred cave of Amarnath and is the shortest route from here as compare to route from Chandanwari (Pahalgam) . Baltal lies on the foot of Zojilla pass.

Zojilla Pass :

Betaab valley is  at a distance of 15 kilometers from Pahalgam . Betab valley got its name from the Sunny Deol  and Amrita Singh hit debut film Betaab. The Valley falls between Pahalgam and Chandanwadi and is en route Amarnath Temple Yatra. The valley surrounded by lush green meadows, snow clad mountains and covered with dense vegetation. It is a very popular touristic destination. Betaab Valley is also a favorite campsite of travelers as it also serves as a base camp for trekking and further exploration of the mountains.[
